Concept testing methods differ mainly in how many concepts a participant sees and in how much depth of reasoning the method captures. Choosing the right one depends on whether the priority is a clean, comparable score, or an understanding of why a concept works.

Monadic testing

In monadic testing, each participant sees and evaluates only one concept. Because there is no comparison effect between concepts, monadic testing produces the cleanest, most realistic reaction to a single concept, closest to how a consumer would encounter it in the real world. The tradeoff is that it requires a larger total sample, since each concept needs its own independent group of participants.

Sequential monadic testing

Sequential monadic testing shows each participant multiple concepts, one after another, rating each independently before moving to the next. It uses a smaller total sample than pure monadic testing since the same participants evaluate several concepts, but it introduces some risk of order effects and comparison bias between concepts.

Comparative testing

Comparative testing shows participants two or more concepts side by side and asks them to choose or rank between them directly. It is efficient for quickly identifying a preferred direction between a small number of options, though it does not tell you how a concept would perform on its own, without a competing option in front of the participant.

Qualitative and AI-moderated concept testing

A participant is shown a concept and an AI moderator or human interviewer probes what specifically drove interest, hesitation, or confusion.
